Beyond the Bouquet: Modern Florals for Handmade Weddings

When most people think “wedding”, they think “flowers”. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t new, modern ways to use flowers in your wedding style. From the Etsy Wedding Team here are 5 modern floral ideas for handmade weddings that go beyond the bouquet.Try Iconic. Simple is modern. So by using one or just a few iconic flowers, you can make a design impact in a very modern way. {handmade by www.elanink.etsy.com}

Use Pattern. Not your traditional floral pattern, another take on modern floral is to use an iconic flower design repeatedly in a pattern. The key to making it modern is simple lines, and not too much detail. {handmade by www.KembaCelebrations.etsy.com}

Go Large. Flowers can be quite dramatic. To make a statement using florals, try using a few of them very large. {handmade by www.YANDEBRIDAL.etsy.com}

Mix and Match. Add in other elements, like stripes or dots, or other shapes like feathers and beads. That gives you a more fun take on modern. {handmade by www.leighannkline.etsy.com}

Color it Bold. Bold or dark colors in florals instantly read modern. For maximum statement pair dark colors with light ones and bold colors with paler ones. {handmade by www.tessakim.etsy.com}

Wedding Dress of the Week (2/6/09)

Today's wedding gown of the week is a combination of delicate ruffles and beautiful tailored structuring that adds drama to an otherwise traditional look. This wedding gown is for the bride who wants to put forth a demure image without giving up her ability to flirt. The just-low-enough plunging V-neckline features a double ruffle of organza that is designed to stand up behind the neck, giving a definite designer touch of elegance. We think this wedding gown looks like it costs a whole lot more than it actually does for that very reason! Finally, the cross-over bodice ends at the natural waistline with a pleated sash and a handmade organza flower. The best part? The pockets! Because no bride should be without lip balm and a breath mint on her wedding day.

Choosing a Wedding Dress

We've talked about choosing a wedding dress in the past, but it's definitely a topic that never gets old. Let's say you already have the wedding gown you'll wear as you walk down the aisle... congratulations! That doesn't mean, however, that you can't keep collecting wedding dress tips for your engaged girlfriends. There's always someone who needs help choosing a wedding gown, so we try never to be without a few helpful tips up our sleeves. For those brides-to-be who know absolutely nothing about choosing a gown, here are some basics:
  • If you're going to be trying on wedding dresses, wear undergarments that are close to those you imagine you'll be wearing on your wedding day.
  • Let bridal salon employees make suggestions -- they deal with brides of all shapes and sizes, and they usually have a good idea of what will look good on you.
  • That said, don't let any salespeople (or loved ones) bully you into choosing a wedding gown you don't like. It's your dress, and you're the one who has to wear it!
  • Explore colors other than white. There are lots of shades of this traditional matrimonial color, but colored wedding gowns are also popular right now.
  • Read those bridal magazines. Even if you're just checking them out at the library, scanning the ads will give you an idea of what wedding gowns are in stores right now.
  • Finally, if you don't buy your accessories at the bridal shop, take home a fabric swatch to match your accessories.

Getting The Dress On

As I mentioned in a previous post, the morning of the wedding woke up to a beautiful sunrise…I then turned the airconditioner off (Pat had turned it up to the max the night before - brrr…, checked the weather channel (no rain!) and promply fell back asleep. I awoke again a few hours later at 8:00am anxious for the day to begin.

My sister, Karen, was going to pick me up at around 9:45am to drive us to our 10:00am hair appointment…she was right on time :)

I really enjoyed the time alone in my hotel room - but at the same time, it did feel kind of lonely. I could have had my sister, or now sister in laws stay with me…but I think I really would have preferred Patrick to be there. I don't regret my decision to spend the night before my wedding away from my fiance…but I don't think I would have regretted staying with him either. I have always fantasized about seeing my hubs for the first time on our wedding day walking down the aisle…but I don't think it really would have mattered if he saw me in my pjs or jeans…the big reveal really comes when everyone is dressed in their finest anyway.

Just a little food for thought…I didn't really give it the thought I should've - espeically considering Patrick pushed to stay the night together…oh well!

Onto the getting ready part. Our photographer was set to arrive at 1:30-ish to take some pictures. The plan was for the 'maids to be dressed and ready to go. I would then get dressed once the photog arrived. When she got there I was in my customized tank (don't hate me for it…lol…I love personalized stuff!):

Before Melissa, our photographer, arrived I'd ordered up some OJ to add to the champagne I'd brought for mimoas…can you see my frugility here? So, we sat around and enjoyed these for awhile. I'd also bought a couple of donuts and muffins (I think only one muffin though…it was all Timmies had left - lol)…we munched on those too. It was funny that although I hadn't really eaten much the week before the wedding (I was PARANOID…like severly…that my dress wouldn't zip up - terrible feelings to have) and was often really hungry…I had like NO appeitie on the day of the wedding. This is not like me. I love food soooo much (hence the 5-7 pounds I've since gained back) - I guess my nerves were bothering me.

After the sitting around for a while (well, I was kind of pacing - I didn't know what to do with myself!). I opened the gift Patrick gave me…I kind of already knew what it was (shhh!)…but it made for some photo-ops:

I'm looking at my MOH, Meg, here…I think she was teasing me because she knew I knew what the gift was…lol - so contrived!

Before I knew it, it was time to put on THE dress :)

I'm a pretty modest girl…which made putting on a wedding gown in front of 5 other people an interesting experience! I made them all promise not to look ;) Of course it was a-ok for the photog to take a few pics…but none of me in my knickers!

Yay - it fits!!!

Dress Fitting Review

I had my first dress fitting on Friday May 16th - a little more than a month before the wedding…and a little less than a month before we left for Ontario. I wanted to wait until the last possible minute so I had a little bit of extra time to lose those couple of pounds I mentioned;) FYI: I did it!

I used the seamstress that Blush Bridal referred me to - not that I had much of a choice. I had very few options because I purchased my dress online - which was one thing that I hadn't thought of when I ordered my dress. I thought I could take it to an atelier or bridal store and they would happily take my money and do the few alterations I required…so not the case. Some stores had "policies" about not altering dresses purchased online…others "didn't have time" because they had their own clients that had purchased dresses from their stores to worry about - eek! Who woulda thunk it would be such a challenge.

I finally did find a very nice lady through Blush Bridal - I hate to say it, but at this very moment I can't recall her name - I think it is Noshi? At any rate if you call Blush Bridal in Victoria, they'll give you a contact name and number. She doesn't have a website or anything like that.

Anyhoo, my two 'maids and I (my other bridesmaid who lives in Ontario got her Mother In Law to alter her dress - she did a great job!) went into her little shop downtown for our first fitting:

I had MAJOR sticker shock when she tallied up the costs of our alterations. My dress is two layers (very few for a Bridal gown) to hem, a French Bustle to put in, and it needed the bust taken it a little bit - oh and I had cups put in because the bra I purchased could bee seen from the back. Anyhoo, they came to $275 - eep! My dress came to $290 (before tax and shipping) - the alterations were as much as the dress! My bridesmaids, who needed similar, minimal alterations came to $175 each. I agreed to pay for them seeing how there dresses were $250 + each (yes, I realize that that is a crazy amount to spend on a bridesmaid dress…but the needed to be separates and have a maternity option ;)

When we went in for our second fitting, I tried on my dress and discovered that the hem was a wee bit too short…so she had to fix that, but overall I think she did a pretty good job - her prices seemed REALLY high for me though.

Another thing that bugged me was that she only accepted cash or cheque - what the heck?!!? No debit machine and no VISA/MasterCard option - verrrry annoying.

A kind of funny aside to this whole experience, was my negotiation skills. At the end of our original meeting she gave me an invoice for what the costs were going to be. Then, when I went to pick up the dresses, I told her that I felt her prices were very high and was wondering why she was charging so much (everyone I had talked to thought she was charging crazy prices). She tells me that she does "very good work." So, we chat about my concerns some more and she says "I want to make you happy, let me see what I can discount you" - score, right? Well she works it out and says "I'll only charge you $650" - I wasn't thinking clearly because I was kinda embarrassed for bringing up the costs to begin with - but I was really sick of being overcharged because it was wedding related. So I say very appreciatively "thank you" - I was full of glee! I told my then fiancĂ© on what a great discount I scored. But when I get home I realize she gave me a $0.40 discount - LMAO…I feel like such a dork ;p

Total Cost: $650
Rating: B+ (lost some points for the lack of debit/credit acceptance and for the lack of negotiation on her prices)
